Your body has been trying to tell you something for a while now.

Not in a mystical way, as if angels were speaking to you through your shoulder blades. In a much simpler and more boring way: your body responds differently when you are aligned than when you are not. Not as a metaphor. As something you can genuinely feel, in your own skin, every day.

What alignment actually feels like

When someone describes those moments of deep alignment, doing something that feels genuinely right, being somewhere that fits, the language they use is strikingly similar every time. Expansive. Light. Like something clicking into place. An energy that does not drain the way it usually does.

When someone describes chronic misalignment, jobs that feel fundamentally wrong, lives organized around the wrong priorities, the language repeats too. Heavy. Tight. A tiredness that sleep does not fix.

For a long time this was thought to be purely psychological. Attitude. Perception. A matter of the mind.

But when people have looked more closely, it turns out that is not the whole story.

The tiredness that makes no sense

One of the most common experiences of living misaligned is a very particular tiredness with no clear cause. You slept enough. You moved your body. Nothing physically demanding happened. And yet.

Part of what is going on is that holding the distance between who you are and how you are living takes constant energy. Not the dramatic energy of a big decision. The quiet, ongoing energy of holding yourself back. Of editing yourself. Of performing a version of you that never quite fits.

Your body, it turns out, keeps a fairly precise account of all of this.

Learning to read the signals

The signal is not always dramatic. It almost never arrives as an existential crisis. More often it shows up like this:

A kind of low grade flatness that persists even when everything looks objectively fine. A disproportionate relief when you finally stop doing something, not just tiredness lifting, but something closer to letting go of a breath you did not realize you were holding. An energy that shows up effortlessly when you run into something that genuinely interests you.

You do not need to become an expert in anything to use this. You only need to start paying attention to what actually feels like relief, instead of what seems like it should.

If you already know this, and it hurts to read

Maybe you have made it this far and you already know. You have already felt that strange tiredness, that heaviness sleep does not touch, that sense of playing a role that never quite fits. And instead of feeling accompanied, maybe you feel worse now: confirmation that something is off.

If that is where you are, we want to say something to you gently: noticing is not the problem. It is the beginning of the solution, even if it does not feel that way right now.

Misalignment is almost never fixed in one sharp move. This is not about quitting tomorrow, changing your whole life next week, having every answer right now. That would be asking your body to go from urgency to relief without walking the real path, which is slow, and which is allowed to be slow.

A tool to hold you in the meantime

Here is something concrete, not to solve everything, but to keep you company through the process.

At the end of each week, instead of asking "was I productive" or "did I get done what I planned," ask yourself two simpler questions: what drained me this week, and what gave me energy back, even if it was just a small moment.

This is not about separating easy from hard. Aligned things can be hard too. It is about noticing the difference between the difficulty of something that matters and the difficulty of something that does not.

Then simply write those answers down somewhere. A notebook, a note on your phone, whatever works. You do not have to act on them yet. You only have to start building, week by week, a map of what your body already knows.

That map, over time, becomes a compass. And a compass does not demand that you change direction today. It just keeps reminding you, patiently, where north is, for whenever you are ready to walk toward it.
